Solar Panel Pigeon Proofing
Proofing solar panels from pigeons is something we are getting more and more calls for. We receive many requests for assistance in preventing pigeons from roosting beneath solar panels.
By the time we arrive they have usually created quite a mess underneath the panels; this mess gives off a horrible damp foul smell caused by the droppings and nesting material, its no wonder we refer to these pigeon pests as rats on wings. Be aware that this mess is quite hazardous and needs to be dealt with accordingly when working around it.
So what can we do to prevent the pigeons gathering and nesting beneath your solar panels
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so we have uploaded a couple of images for you.
As you can see we usually install a mesh apron around the perimeter of the solar panels to prevent pigeons from getting underneath them.
Quality Materials for Pigeon Proofing Solar Panels
We use either galvanised or stainless steel mesh.
On the galvanised side we offer two variations as we are still undecided on which is the better of the two.
The stronger of the two solar panel pigeon proofing system is 200mm wide strips of galvanised 16 gauge 25mm x 25mm wire mesh manufactured using European ‘grade A’ hot-dipped, the other has narrower spacing and may be beneficial against smaller birds as well. This is a 200mm wide 19 gauge, 25mm x 12.5mm galvanised mesh. The clips used for holding this mesh are smaller UV stable polycarbanate clips that appear to have a greater grip, whether this is actually required we don’t know for sure – but doubt it.
The stainless steel pigeon proofing system uses 300mm wide strips of 25mm X 25mm European ‘grade A’ 304 stainless steel welded mesh.
We recommend the use of the stainless steel mesh in and around Cardiff as it is a corrosion-proof solution.
The mesh apron is held in base using plastic clips that are UV stable and won’t scratch the anodised frames of the solar panels.
Generally we place 2 clips on the short edges and 3 clips on the long edges, this may vary dependent upon requirement.
These specially designed clips bind the mesh to the panels without the need for drilling holes or damaging the system in some other way.
How not to proof solar panels
Can’t see the warranty being worth much once something like this has been done.
Best Solar Panel Pigeon Proofing System
The mesh apron system works very well providing the solar panels have a minimum 20 mm return lip on the underside of the frame, which is the normal scenario.
For solar panel systems without this lip there is an alternative method that can be used; for further info on this please see our page Solar Panel Pigeon Spikes.
This system is just as effective at preventing and proofing solar panels from pigeons as the mesh apron and does not touch the solar panel system, completely avoiding the possibility of a warranty being voided.
